Mandarin-Speaking Children's Verbal Packaging of Agent–Patient Relationship within Change-of-State Events

Song, Z. T., & Haryu, E.

Under review Journal

In Mandarin, state-change events are expressed with resultative verb compounds, while no-state-change events take monomorphemic action verbs. In a comprehension experiment (96 children, M = 5.32 yrs) and a production experiment (100 children, M = 5.11 yrs), we asked whether differences in endstate salience contribute to children's challenges in packaging action and result into verbs.

The Reliance of Morphological Cues in Understanding the Lexical Concepts of Japanese Verbs: The Case of Adult Japanese Native Speakers

Song, Z. T., & Wang, C. (2021)

Hirosaki Daigaku KokugoKubungaku [Journal of Hirosaki University Japanese Language and Literature], 42, 1–24 Journal

Native Japanese speakers interpreted novel verbs based on their morphological form: verbs with the past-tense suffix -ta were mapped onto the subevent preserving the result, while verbs with -teiru applied to both subevents — evidence for morphological bootstrapping, with implications for L2 learners.
